Dominican Republic entry from the USA (6 months left on passport)?

I booked a trip there today for Feb. My boyfriends passport expires July 4th of this year. I know some countries will not let you in if your passport expires within 6 months of your trip. I asked the travel agency who booked my vacation if the DR had this law/rule and she said no. I also looked on the travel.state.gov site (US dept. of state, Bureau of consular affairs) and it said for entry/exit you just need a valid passport. Now my question is as I was reviewing the paperwork later on at home, it says US citizens must carry a valid US govt. issued passport. The passport cannot expire within 6 months of your return date. Now I’m confused b/c I don’t know what to believe. The govt site and the travel agency doesn’t say it needs to have at least 6 months of validity left. I am calling the travel agency tomorrow and asking them, but I’m just worried about it now b/c of what the paperwork states.

When you travel abroad the law stipulates that your passport must have 6 months of validity left upon your return home.
Nothing else to add.
